Information about the division
This PhD candidate is positioned at the Division of Building Technology in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology. The Division of Building Technology has a staff of 25 persons that work with creating energy efficient, healthy and durable buildings. The division consists of two research groups: Building Materials andBuilding Physics. Both groups deal with sustainable and energy efficient buildings, and good indoor environment. Within the research group Building Material, the main focus is on cement and wood based materials and surface coating on such materials. Within the research group Building Physics, focus is on heat, air and moisture transport in the building envelope and on the building as a whole system, including district heating The Division of Building Technology also teaches in all levels of education at Chalmers, primarily in the areas of Civil Engineering and Architecture.
Job description
Building materials are very important for a sustainable development and economic growth. Sustainable constructions need a long service life and, due to the large quantity of material that is required in constructions, the usage of resources is high. The impact of defects in materials used in buildings and infrastructures can result in large economic, environmental as well as social consequences and even loss of human life. Concrete is the most used solid material in the world. In Sweden, owing to the long coastline and intensive use of de-icing salts in winter time, the concrete infrastructures are often exposed to a demanding environment containing chlorides that can initiate corrosion of reinforcement steel in concrete, resulting in early damage of the concrete structure.
This doctoral project intends to improve the knowledge and understanding of electrochemical properties of concrete and reinforcement steel, in order to develop a new concrete cover system for preventing reinforced concrete from reinforcement corrosion as well as from surface cracking. In the project, different corrosion resistant conductive fibres will be tested and used as anode, while the reinforcement steel will act as cathode to form an intermittent cathodic prevention system. The long term performance of the system will be investigated in order to assure a service life of 50-100 years. The work includes theoretical studies, laboratory tests and field investigations.
The majority of your working time will be devoted to your own research studies. The work also includes about 20% departmental work or teaching.According to the current financial situation the employment is limited to three years fulltime employment with the preliminary goal to obtain the degree of Licentiate of Engineeringand with a possible extension of employment up to a maximum of additionally two years, depending on the financial situation in order to obtain a PhD's degree.
Interviews for the position will take place in Göteborg during February/March 2012 and we want you to be able to start soon thereafter.
Qualifications
The applicant should hold (or expect to hold soon) a Master degree in civil engineering, material science, physiochemical or electrochemical engineering, or alike, and be able to demonstrate their capability to conduct the research work. Good knowledge in porous materials, physiochemistry or electrochemistry and in basic computing/programming is essential. Teaching experience is highly valued.
