The Department of Applied Mechanics is one of the leading environments within Vehicle and Mechanical Engineering research. The six different research divisions conduct world-leading research, usually in close collaboration with national and international industries. Research topics encompass both fundamental and applied research questions. Our goal is to contribute to the development of safe and environmentally friendly products for a sustainable society.

The Department of Applied Mechanics offers a wide range of courses in the undergraduate programmes, in addition to two international Masters programmes in Automotive Engineering and Applied Mechanics. Courses are available within the four graduate schools: Machine and Vehicle Systems, Solid and Structural Mechanics, Thermo and Fluid Dynamic and Internal Combustion Engine Technology. In addition Applied Mechanics provides international continuation courses.

The department has approximately 170 employees.
Information about the division

The research at the Division of Combustion concerns combustion and emissions formation in internal combustion engines and gas turbines. It is highly focused on supporting the transition to a future sustainable transport system.

Chalmers has a research center of excellence called the Combustion Engine Research Center (CERC, http://www.chalmers.se/am/cerc-en/) , and this is one of about ten projects within the center. CERC works closely with Swedish industry, and spray experiments are closely coupled to engine experiments and to computer simulations. Chalmers has a high pressure and temperature spray research chamber for basic spray studies. This student will work mostly with a SCANIA high pressure injector in the spray chamber. The research will involve working with several faculty members to apply advanced optical diagnostics to characterize this spray. You will also occasionally help support other projects such as a spray/wall interaction project with Volvo Technologies.

Job description

We are seeking a new PhD student to start as soon as possible. The PhD student will work with several of the following techniques:
* Determine spray penetration, spray angle, etc using high-speed imaging and various forms of planar laser-sheet imaging.
* Soot imaging.
* Ignition delay and lift-off length measurement via chemiluminescence detection/imaging.
* Measure turbulence length scales at spray edge with phase Doppler interferometry
* Raman measurement of fuel/air ratio vs. position
* Multi-line  fluorescence of important soot precursors

The majority of your working time is devoted to your own research studies. A PhD student is also expected to develop own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. In addition, the position will normally include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties.

The employment is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications

The applicant should have a Master of Science (Swedish: civilingenjör) exam, preferably in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or Applied Physics  with knowledge of fluid mechanics, or with a similar background. Knowledge about sprays and high pressure spray research chambers is advantageous.

The undergraduates are normally taught in Swedish, although the graduate level teaching is in English. Knowledge of the Swedish language is desirable but not a requirement (Chalmers offers language courses in Swedish). Applicants who do not have Swedish as native language should be able to teach in Swedish after two years of employment.

Chalmers University of Technology conducts research and education in engineering sciences, architecture, technology-related mathematical sciences, natural and nautical sciences, working in close collaboration with industry and society.

The strategy for scientific excellence focuses on our eight Areas of Advance; Built Environment, Energy, Information & Communication Technology, Life Science, Materials Science, Nanoscience & Nanotechnology, Production and Transport. The aim is to make an active contribution to a sustainable future using the basic sciences as a foundation and innovation and entrepreneurship as the central driving forces. Chalmers has around 11,000 students and 2,500 employees. New knowledge and improved technology have characterised Chalmers since its foundation in 1829, completely in accordance with the will of William Chalmers and his motto: Avancez!
