Stimulated by major needs and challenges in science and society, our ambition is to foster a creative environment for academic research, teaching and outreach. We provide a competitive advantage by linking top-level international and interdisciplinary academic performance in the areas of material science, nanotechnology and energy research with world-leading industrial R&D&I projects.
We address a wide array of experimental, computational, methodological and theoretical challenges, from fundamental physics research, through the development of new materials to direct industrial projects generating new inventions. We have a strong learning commitment on all levels from undergraduate to PhD studies where physics meet engineering.
We are situated in a stimulating and creative environment with 200 physics teachers and researchers, 120 PhD students and 550 undergraduate students.Information about the division
We are looking for a PhD student to explore the basic science of structure and dynamics of proton conducting oxides for environmentally friendly fuel cells. The aim is to develop an atomic-scale understanding of key fundamental properties, such as structure, structural disorder, and the nature of proton conduction mechanisms, in the investigated materials and apply this knowledge to the tailoring of new materials with better performance. The work is mainly experimental in nature and the primary tools to this end involve the use of neutron and synchrotron x-ray scattering methods, available at international large-scale facilities in Europe and USA, and vibrational spectroscopy, available at Chalmers. The work will be conducted in collaboration with a range of different research groups at Chalmers, as well as with colleagues at other Swedish Universities and at Universities abroad.
Job description
The majority of the student's working time will be devoted to his/her own research, with the main objective to obtain a PhD degree at the end of the project. For this purpose, it is expected that the student will be able to develop and pursue his/her own scientific ideas, and communicate his/her results in a wide context, through the publication of scientific articles and oral presentations at international conferences, for example. In addition, the position will normally include 20% department work, mostly teaching duties. Since many of the experiments will be performed abroad (for example, at the Institut Laue-Langevin [www.ill.eu] and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility [www.esrf.eu]) and the project is conducted in collaboration with international research groups, the student will travel on a regular basis.
The employment is limited to a maximum of five years.
Qualifications
We are looking for a PhD student with a Master degree and strong interest in physics and/or materials physics, or a related discipline. Candidates must have strong social skills, work ethic, and collaboration and communication (oral and written) skills. Candidates must also show great potential to drive projects independently.
