At the Department of Signals and Systems, we conduct world-leading research in biomedical engineering, antennas, signal processing, control, automation, mechatronics and communication systems. Our research deals to a large extent with the modeling and development of efficient systems for extracting and processing information. Systems our researchers deal with include for instance e-Health, hearing aids, robotics, power chains, and mobile telephony.

The department has about 120 employees, divided into three research divisions and one administrative unit. A majority of our activities are gathered at campus Johanneberg, except for some research in medical engineering which is done at Sahlgrenska and an education unit at campus Lindholmen. The department offers more than 70 courses, of which are most included in the Masters Programs; "Biomedical Engineering", "Systems, Control and Mechatronics", and "Communication Engineering".Information about the project

Sweden has historically used long vehicle combinations in order to increase productivity/efficiency of road transportation. The Volvo Group initiated research project "Integrated propulsion, braking and steering of long vehicle combinations" aims at develop the future's long modular vehicle combinations with respect to both energy efficiency and vehicle stability. Traditionally, it is only the tractor or truck that provides the vehicle combination with traction. In this project, the vehicle modules might bear its own energy storage and thus open up for active traction, braking and steering of the individual modules.
The "Integrated propulsion, braking and steering of long vehicle combinations" project is a collaboration between the Volvo Group and Chalmers, including the Department of Signals and Systems and the Vehicle Dynamics Group, and it is sponsored by the Swedish Energy Agency under the program FFI.

Job description

This project will contribute to the understanding of the dynamics of long modular vehicles. The project includes studies on how to configure the modules in a vehicle combination, which vehicle combinations that are the most suitable for different transportation tasks and how to control the vehicle combination in a safe and stable manner. Experimental validation is planned either in a simulator environment or full-scale experiments in cooperation with other stakeholders.

The majority of your working time is devoted to your own research studies. A PhD student is also expected to develop own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. In addition, the position will normally include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties.

The employment is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications

Applicants shall have a Master's Degree or corresponding (Sw. civilingenjörsexamen) in Electrical
Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Math, in a related discipline. As for all PhD studies, a genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical and communication skills, orally as well as literally, are needed. A successful applicant should have a strong background in mathematical modeling of dynamic systems, optimization and control theory.

The undergraduates are normally taught in Swedish, although the graduate level teaching is in English. Thus good language skills are required. Applicants who do not have Swedish as native language should be able to teach in Swedish after two years of employment.

Application deadline: 2012-02-17
